In 2002, President George W. Bush signed the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). The law included new federal election requirements such as the replacement of outdated voting equipment, the creation of centralized Statewide databases of registered voters, and improvements to the administration of elections.
Key points of HAVA include, but are not limited to:
- Voters are required to show ID before voting
- Voters with impairments will be able to cast a secret ballot
- Polling places will be accessible to voters with disabilities
- Voting systems will leave a permanent paper trail and be able to be audited
